Please read these Terms and Conditions (“Terms”, “Terms and Conditions”) carefully before using the services operated by Acadiana Movers (“us”, “we”, or “our”). Your access to and use of our moving and storage services is conditioned on your acceptance of and compliance with these Terms. These Terms apply to all visitors, users, and customers who access or use our Service.

1. Estimates and Pricing

Local Moves (Hourly): For local moves (typically within 50 miles), services are charged by the hour. The billable time includes the time spent traveling to the job site (travel fee), loading, driving to the destination, and unloading.

  • Minimums: All local moves are subject to a minimum charge (typically 1 hour) as specified in your estimate.
  • Accuracy: While we strive to provide accurate estimates, the final cost for hourly moves is determined by the actual time worked, which varies based on weather, access conditions, elevator availability, and the volume of goods.

Long Distance Moves (Flat Rate): For long-distance moves, we may provide a Binding Estimate (Flat Rate). This price is guaranteed based on the customer’s inventory list.

  • Inventory Changes: If additional items are added to the shipment that were not on the original inventory list, or if the destination access conditions change (e.g., shuttle truck required), the price may be adjusted.

2. Payment Terms

Deposit: A deposit is required to reserve your moving date. This deposit is credited toward your final balance.

Final Payment:

  • Local Moves: Payment is due in full upon completion of the job, before the crew departs.
  • Long Distance: Payment policies for long-distance moves will be specified in your Bill of Lading. Typically, the balance is due prior to unloading at the destination.

Accepted Methods: We accept cash, certified checks, and major credit cards. Personal checks are generally not accepted for the final balance unless pre-approved in writing.

3. Cancellation and Rescheduling

We understand that closing dates can change. However, late cancellations cause significant logistical issues.

  • Notice Period: Clients must provide at least 48 hours’ notice to reschedule or cancel a move.
  • Fees: Cancellations made with less than 48 hours’ notice may result in the forfeiture of the deposit.

4. Valuation and Carrier Liability

It is important to understand the difference between “Insurance” and “Valuation.” Acadiana Movers offers two levels of liability coverage as required by law:

Option A: Released Value Protection (Basic) This is included in your move at no additional cost. Under this option, our liability for loss or damage is limited to 60 cents per pound per article. For example, if a 50-pound dresser is damaged, the maximum payout is $30.00 (50lbs x $0.60), regardless of the item’s actual value.

Option B: Full Value Protection For an additional premium, you may purchase Full Value Protection. Under this option, if an item is lost or damaged, we will offer to repair it, replace it with a like item, or make a cash settlement for the current market value of the item.

Exclusions from Liability: We are generally not liable for:

  • Packed by Owner (PBO): Damage to items inside boxes packed by the customer, unless the box shows significant external physical damage caused by our handling.
  • Particle Board Furniture: Ready-to-assemble furniture (e.g., IKEA, Walmart) is not built to withstand transport assembled. We are not liable for the loosening of joints or chipping of particle board furniture unless we disassemble it.
  • Internal Electronics: The internal mechanics of electronics (TVs, computers) if there is no visible external damage to the casing.
  • Hazardous Materials: We cannot move and are not liable for hazardous items, including paint, propane, chemicals, or ammunition.

5. Customer Responsibilities

To ensure a smooth move, the customer is responsible for:

  • Presence: Being present (or having a representative present) at both the load and unload sites to sign paperwork and direct the crew.
  • Walkways: Ensuring safe, clear access to the home (shoveling snow, removing ice, clearing driveways).
  • Personal Valuables: Transporting jewelry, cash, medication, and important documents (passports, deeds) personally. These items should not be loaded onto the moving truck.

6. Claims Process

All claims for damage or loss must be made in writing.

  • Time Limit: Claims must be filed within 90 days of the delivery date (or as specified by Louisiana state law).
  • Inspection: The customer must allow Acadiana Movers to inspect the damaged item before any repairs are made. Do not dispose of damaged items or packing materials until the claim is resolved.

7. Right of Refusal

We reserve the right to refuse service or stop work if:

  • The environment is unsafe (e.g., structural instability, pest infestation, severe mold).
  • The crew is subjected to abusive behavior or harassment.
  • The move involves hazardous materials or illegal items.

8. Governing Law

These Terms shall be governed and construed in accordance with the laws of the State of Louisiana, without regard to its conflict of law provisions. Any disputes arising from these terms or the services provided shall be resolved in the courts of Lafayette Parish, Louisiana.
